All hoods are off in this era of open-faced racism. America’s Klansman in Chief has again endorsed white supremacy in a direct message to his followers.
His Twitter message on Thursday cites a false claim of white minority victimhood in South Africa, conjured up by a resurgent fringe in the country, as warranting ‘study’ by the Secretary of State:
I have asked Secretary of State @SecPompeo to closely study the South Africa land and farm seizures and expropriations and the large scale killing of farmers. “South African Government is now seizing land from white farmers.” @TuckerCarlson @FoxNews
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 23, 2018
That the popular government is seeking land reform in South Africa comes as no surprise — decades after the end of Apartheid, in spite of modest gains for the black majority, ownership of land remains solidly in the hands of white commercial farmers. Entrenched poverty remains a problem where white people make up 9% of population and hold 72% of the farmland.
Yet there is no basis for the claim that redistribution would come by force, nor is there any document of ‘large scale killing of farmers.’
The credulous retelling of such myths is simply vile, it echoes the twisted rationale of mass murderers Charles Manson and Dylann Roof in their bloodlust to spark a race war. From the beginning of his election campaign this president has fed off resentment of nonwhites’ advancement, because he longs for an extension of his inherited wealth and entitlement at the cost of working peoples’ exploitation.
But it ain’t no new thing, as Gil Scott-Heron said. Retaining white supremacy means dredging up the old world order, and to do that 45* hides no shame in playing to his supporters’ worst fears and deepest ignorance.
